Crocodile Texture Vermillion Lacquer Chawan|朱漆鱷紋茶碗

Materials

Unglazed stoneware and lacquer (Urushi)

Dimensions

Dia 13 x H 7.8 cm

A piece that celebrates the teabowl tradition in Japanese tea ceremony.

Inspired by leather craft, I used mold-making techniques with crocodile tailbone leather to give the clay with a leather-like appearance, blurring the boundaries between leather and ceramic. The round form of the traditional Japanese tea bowl is deconstructed into eight slab-built panels. Preserving certain qualities of Wabi-
sabi aesthetics, such as handmade traces and the humble sheen of black clay, the work juxtaposes unexpected tension with aggressive crocodile skin texture and a vermilion lacquer interior.
